Math courses at NS are designed to help students develop strong analytical abilities and intellectual versatility through a rigorous pursuit of mathematical content. Students who graduate with a degree in mathematics will have mastered ideas and tools that can be applied to a wide range of practical applications, from science and engineering to marketing and finance.

Program Learning Outcomes

The math program learning outcomes are broken into four areas:

  • Perspective: Students will develop the perspective necessary to understand the interconnected nature of mathematics.
  • Critical Thinking: Students will build a solid foundation in mathematical thinking.
  • Technology: Students will develop relevant technological skills.
  • Personal Development: Students will develop skills that will help them adapt to a rapidly changing world.

Upon completion of the program, the students will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental concepts of and the relationships between the major areas of mathematics. (Perspective: Fundamental Concepts)
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how the major areas of mathematics can be applied to contextual problems. (Perspective: Applications)
  3. Model and solve problems using appropriate mathematical concepts and frameworks. (Critical Thinking: Modeling)
  4. Evaluate the quality of proposed solutions. (Critical Thinking: Evaluating)
  5. Use technology to solve mathematical problems, including providing meaningful interpretations of the output of such technologies. (Technology: Application)
  6. Communicate their ideas to others with the appropriate level of rigor and clarity for the audience. (Personal Development: Communication)
  7. Work in groups to move collaboratively towards a shared goal. (Personal Development: Collaboration)
