English B.A.

Mission Statement

The English program helps develop academic skills for critical thinking, as well as oral and written expression. English majors learn how to analyze and respond to a variety of texts. They also learn how to write in and about various academic disciplines. These skills allow students to broaden their critical and social perspectives as well as their imagination, thereby helping them to succeed in their collegiate and post-collegiate careers.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the students will be able to:

  1. Critically engage with scholarly research to support an argument.
  2. Create texts that utilize the rhetorical situations and writing conventions associated with each respective mode: research, creative, literary, etc.
  3. Interpret traditional texts, such as prose and poetry, and nontraditional forms, such as graphic novels, film, and digital media.
  4. Identify aesthetics and/or conventions of various English fields as well as emerging areas of theory.
  5. Articulate the importance of culturally diverse contributions to the respective canons and an intersectional approach to the interpretation of texts.
