Program Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of the program, the Bilingual Teach Candidates will be able to:
- Explain theories of language and learner development, bilingualism, and cultural diversity relative to creating an inclusive and appropriate learning environment for bilingual learners. (THE LEARNER AND LEARNING: InTASC 1, 2; NABE 1)
- Design active and demanding bilingual lessons that use research-based pedagogical approaches and methods, knowledge of language and academic content, students’ learning needs, cultural characteristics, and funds of knowledge that reside within students and in their communities to support students in meeting state language and academic standards. (PLANNING INSTRUCTION: InTASC 3; NABE 2)
- Demonstrate how assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process for guiding instruction of bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic content. (ASSESSMENT: InTASC 6; NABE 4)
- Implement varied research-based bilingual instructional models and strategies, incorporating appropriate pedagogy and reflective practice, that create an accessible and meaningful learning experience to ensure mastery of the content. (INSTRUCTION: InTASC 4, 5; NABE 5)
- Plan and implement content instruction using bilingual materials in English and another language that supports students’ goals and encourages connections between content and language to promote accessibility and bilingualism. (CONTENT KNOWLEDGE: InTASC 7, 8; NABE 2)
Curriculum
The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Concentration in Bilingual Education prepares future K-8 teachers in the areas of literacy acquisition as well as content methods, assessment and curriculum development for monolingual and bilingual classrooms.
