Special Education B.A. with a Concentration in Autism

The Bachelor of Arts in Special Education with a Concentration in Autism will prepare graduates provide an individualized education for students identified with high incidence disabilities and autism spectrum disorders in K-12 classrooms in Nevada. Graduates will be prepared to assess and teach academic, behavioral, and functional life skills for students with disabilities. In addition to fulfilling college requirements for a bachelor's degree, graduates will also meet coursework requirements Nevada Department of Education issued teacher licenses in the areas of Special Education Generalist and Autism. There is a shortage of Special Education teachers in Nevada and across the United States and employment prospects are good.

The mission of the Bachelor of Arts in Special Education with a Concentration in Autism is to develop highly competent and caring educators who, together with individuals with disabilities and their families and other professionals, will collaborate to provide successful educational experiences and enhanced quality of life through their effective practices, equitable opportunities, and advocacy.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

  • Recognize the capital that diverse learners with disabilities bring to the learning environment;
  • Use evidence-based practices to ensure student success in a continuum of programs;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to prepare, implement, and evaluate their instructional practices;
  • Align lessons to professional content standards with the knowledge and skills of how to accommodate, modify, and adapt curriculum for diverse learners with disabilities;
  • Embed High Leverage Practices in instruction;
  • Interpret formal and informal assessment data to make instructional decisions and monitor student progress;
  • Collaborate with peers and families to support learners’ academic, behavioral, social, and affective needs; and
  • Practice standards of ethics in education.
