Counseling Minor (emphasis in Addiction Treatment and Prevention)
<-- Return to the 2020-2021 Undergraduate Catalog
Students interested in careers involving counseling or therapy are strongly encouraged to pursue a minor in counseling. The course schedule has been designed to ensure that students who pursue the counseling minor will be able to complete it within a 3-year span. Students interested in the minor should talk to their advisor about planning their schedules.
The Counseling Minor at NSC will provide students with knowledge, applicable skills, and a deeper understanding of the counseling and mental health fields. It introduces students to the foundations of mental health counseling, diversity of roles in the field, and goals for professional development as a helper. The minor’s emphasis on addiction counseling also coincides with the requirements of a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Intern (CADC-I) with Nevada’s Board of Examiners for Drug & Alcohol Counselors. The 18 credits of addiction/human services-focused courses reduce the state-required internship from 4000 hours to 1500 hours. After completing these 1500 hours at a community treatment agency, students will have the pre-requisite needed to take the IC&RC ADC Written Examination to pursue the professional role as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC), a state-recognized practicing addiction counselor. The Counseling Minor also highly prepares students interested in a variety of other helping positions upon graduation and/or in post-graduate professional roles, such as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSCW), or Licensed Professional Counselor (CPC).
