SPA 345 Observation of Clinical Services

Obtain ASHA's requirement of 25 hours of observing assessment and intervention sessions; become familiar with clinic operations; develop skills of observing communication behaviors, i.e., judging social-pragmatic abilities; estimating speech intelligibility and factors negatively affecting intelligibility, identifying and transcribing articulation errors; estimating MLU and usage of grammatical morphemes, judging ability to use language to describe, explain, and retell events, identifying characteristics of voice and fluency; identify communication disorder categories based upon case summary information, case history and client concerns, assessment results, and recommendations, therapy goals and objectives and informal observation impressions; organize case information and informal observational notes in a report format; become familiar with session designs, aspects of test administration and informal assessments, aspects of reinforcement strategies, aspects of various teaching strategies, aspects of data collection, aspects of behavior management and behaviors shaping strategies, varieties of therapy materials and clinician-client interactions. Additional materials and/or fees may be required.

Pre-requisites: SPA 201, SPA 320, SPA 340 Co-requisite: SPA 330 Pre-requisite(s): Admission to the Speech Pathology Program, or Master's Preparatory Plan in Speech Pathology or Human Health Sciences w/concentration in Speech Pathology.
